Nothing is ever truly perfect, but that doesn't mean it won't turn out all right in the end...
Excerpt
"Hey, you're the bartender!" I tossed back. But there was something funny in his face. I looked up, caught his eye - he glanced away quickly and then seemed to sigh and looked back. I felt a tugging in the pit of my stomach. "All right," I agreed, more quietly. "I'll stay."
He didn't say anything, but looked pleased. When he slid the glass back across the bar to me, he kept his grip on it and quite deliberately brushed the back of my hand with his fingertips, as I accepted it.
He pulled a stool up behind the bar and sat down facing me, reaching for a chip from the basket. "I'm always starving by the time a night shift is over," he commented. "Working days is easier - there's more food floating around, there's usually something open to snack on. And stuff's still open for business when you get off!"
I shrugged. "Since I got the apartment I don't usually go looking for food at this hour; I just cook if I'm hungry. You don't have a kitchen?"
"Well, I do. But my roomie works mornings and if I cook this late I wake her up."
"That sucks."
He shrugged. "She's easy to live with, otherwise. Keeps costs down." I caught one of the drunks at the back table starting to get up and nodded my head in his direction. Bryan caught the hint and rose. I watched him move as he walked away, towards the other end of the bar. He moved well, I could see from his arms that he was strong, medium-built and fit, everything in a line, high cheekbones and tanned skin. Sensitive, intelligent blue eyes. I was definitely interested. And he'd asked me to hang out. He'd wanted me to stay. Then again, that could be because he didn't want to be alone with the drunks, like he'd said. He didn't like dealing with people who were totally sloshed - that was one reason he usually worked the afternoon/early-evening shift, he'd told me earlier.
He was gone for several minutes, as the clock ticked towards two. At a quarter til he told them, loudly and firmly, that this was last call, and if they wanted anything else to tell him now. They shouted, practically in his ear, for another pitcher of beer and I saw his handsome face darken in annoyance. They really were being obnoxious. I could see beer spilled on the floor over there and they were yelling and carrying on.
He stalked back over to me after he carried the pitcher over. "I could tell them they're too drunk an' throw them out," he muttered. "But it's so close to 2 it's easier to just give ‘em what they want." He looked around. "I'm going to start packing up the chairs, let them know I'm closing down."
"Want help?"
He smiled now, flicking his bright eyes up briefly to meet mine, and I felt a warmth rush through me. "Sure, thanks."
We started at the opposite end of the floor from the group of guys, wiping the tables, wiping the chairs, then turning them upside down on top of the tables. I watched his arm muscles flex as he worked, and realized as we ended up side by side, turning the last table up (other than the one the guys were at), that he'd been watching me, too. The chairs piled up between us and his customers, we smiled at each other, a little sheepishly.
"Hey - you still hungry?" I asked, impulsively.
"Yeah," he said, slowly, eyes on me.
"You want to come over to my place? I've got frozen pizza an' stuff, at least."
"You sure? I don't want to be a bother."
I nodded, feeling butterflies erupt in my stomach. I could be misreading him completely... It was different at the gay bars; you offered, you got accepted or rejected, you moved on. This was a different situation here.
